Commuting Graphs of Finite Groups
The commuting graph of a finite group is defined to have the nontrivial elements of the group as its vertices, and an edge joining each commuting pair of elements. We explore the structure of the commuting graph for a variety of groups. In particular, the diameter of the commuting graph of the symmetric group Sn is precisely described, based on the nature of n and n − 1. Furthermore the connected components of this graph are completely classified. We continue by establishing upper bounds on the diameter of the commuting graph for a certain class of solvable groups. Finally, we provide a structure theorem for groups of order paqb that consist strictly of p- and q-elements, including a description of the commuting graph of such a group.

Assessing general relationships between aboveground biomass and vegetation structure parameters for improved carbon estimate from lidar remote sensing
Lidar‐based aboveground biomass is derived based on the empirical relationship between lidar‐measured vegetation height and aboveground biomass, often leading to large uncertainties of aboveground biomass estimates at large scales. This study investigates whether the use of any additional lidar‐derived vegetation structure parameters besides height improves aboveground biomass estimation. The analysis uses data collected in the field and with the Laser Vegetation Imaging Sensor (LVIS), and the Echidna® validation instrument (EVI), a ground‐based hemispherical‐scanning lidar data in New England in 2003 and 2007. Our field data analysis shows that using wood volume (approximated by the product of basal area and top 10% tree height) and vegetation type (conifer/softwood or deciduous/hardwood forests, providing wood density) has the potential to improve aboveground biomass estimates at large scales. This result is comparable to previous individual‐tree based analyses. Our LVIS data analysis indicates that structure parameters that combine height and gap fraction, such as RH100*cover and RH50*cover, are closely related to wood volume and thus biomass particularly for conifer forests. RH100*cover and RH50*cover perform similarly or even better than RH50, a good biomass predictor found in previous study. This study shows that the use of structure parameters that combine height and gap fraction (rather than height alone) improves the aboveground biomass estimate, and that the fusion of lidar and optical remote sensing (to provide vegetation type) will provide better aboveground biomass estimates than using lidar alone. Our ground lidar analysis shows that EVI provides good estimates of wood volume, and thus accurate estimates of aboveground biomass particularly at the stand level.
RoboChart: modelling and verification of the functional behaviour of robotic applications
Robots are becoming ubiquitous: from vacuum cleaners to driverless cars, there is a wide variety of applications, many with potential safety hazards. The work presented in this paper proposes a set of constructs suitable for both modelling robotic applications and supporting verification via model checking and theorem proving. Our goal is to support roboticists in writing models and applying modern verification techniques using a language familiar to them. To that end, we present RoboChart, a domain-specific modelling language based on UML, but with a restricted set of constructs to enable a simplified semantics and automated reasoning. We present the RoboChart metamodel, its well-formedness rules, and its process-algebraic semantics. We discuss verification based on these foundations using an implementation of RoboChart and its semantics as a set of Eclipse plug-ins called RoboTool.

Mr Blair toured a British-run academy for recruits to the Iraqi police force in the small town of Az Zubayr - overseen by PSNI assistant chief constable Steven White - before addressing troops at the Shaibah logistics base near Iraq's second city of Basra.
HDAC Regulates Transcription at the Outset of Axolotl Tail Regeneration
Tissue regeneration is associated with complex changes in gene expression and post-translational modifications of proteins, including transcription factors and histones that comprise chromatin. We tested 172 compounds designed to target epigenetic mechanisms in an axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) embryo tail regeneration assay. A relatively large number of compounds (N = 55) inhibited tail regeneration, including 18 histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACi). In particular, romidepsin, an FDA-approved anticancer drug, potently inhibited tail regeneration when embryos were treated continuously for 7 days. Additional experiments revealed that romidepsin acted within a very narrow, post-injury window. Romidepsin treatment for only 1-minute post amputation inhibited regeneration through the first 7 days, however after this time, regeneration commenced with variable outgrowth of tailfin tissue and abnormal patterning. Microarray analysis showed that romidepsin altered early, transcriptional responses at 3 and 6-hour post-amputation, especially targeting genes that are implicated in tumor cell death, as well as genes that function in the regulation of transcription, cell differentiation, cell proliferation, pattern specification, and tissue morphogenesis. Our results show that HDAC activity is required at the time of tail amputation to regulate the initial transcriptional response to injury and regeneration.

Tony Blair was under pressure last night to give full details of warnings about possible terrorist threats to Westerners in Indonesia received before last weekend's Bali bombing. Shadow foreign secretary Michael Ancram tabled a question to Mr [Jack Straw], asking him what assessment he had made of the apparent admission by Australian premier John Howard that his country had been warned Bali was a potential terrorist target. Mr Blair's spokesman insisted that although an American warning had been received by Britain, \"my understanding is that it was very broad-based, non- specific, about a generic threat\". Mr [Duncan Smith] said: \"The Prime Minister should clear up the growing confusion about what warnings were received by the British Government before the Bali bombing. \"Downing Street has today admitted that it was told of a threat to six islands in Indonesia, including Bali.

Mr [Blair] was speaking amid claims that he had been snubbed by Saudi Arabia, home to one of the region's largest fundamentalist communities. A Saudi-owned newspaper quoted 'informed sources' as saying that Saudi Arabia had told Mr Blair he would not be received in the kingdom as part of his three-day round of shuttle diplomacy. Mr Blair's trip, designed to shore up support for the coalition among Arab states, has included talks with the president of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Zayed, Oman's Sultan Qaboos and Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak. 'We recognise that in this situation the purpose of the terrorists that carried out the attack on September 11 was not just to kill large numbers of innocent people. The purpose was to set in train a series of events that would divide people - Arab and Western, Muslim and other faiths, to divide people across the world. Our response has got to be to say to these people: you will not divide us at this time. We know the game you are playing.'
